What your character can offer:
Jowy is the bearer of the Black Sword Rune, the destructive aspect of the Rune of the Beginning. This Rune possesses destructive magic in the form of many swords summoned from another dimension and, really, unlike the Bright Shield Rune which actually does possess a balance of healing and destructive magic, the Black Sword is an all out offensive-themed rune. It also reflects Jowy's character very well, as someone who would cut through his own path to achieve his means.
Aside from being very skilled with the use of a quarterstaff/bo, and having considerable experience in battle and other skills gleaned from being a part of a military unit for a time, Jowy is also a competent strategist and leader. He successfully took a fortified city with just five thousand men, and avoided any casualties from his side, in addition to later on successfully securing the Highland throne for himself; in short, he's pretty skilled.
Finally, despite being the bearer of a pretty destructive-themed rune, Jowy is actually a gentle and kind young man who has a very soft spot for cute, little, and vulnerable children. He's going to be around taking care of said children, quite possibly. ♥ And he also has a pretty high tolerance to poison. :D
What items will they be bringing with them?

There was a loud whoosh as Jowy made a quick swipe at the thin air with his quarterstaff. Each swipe, jab, and twirl of his weapon were meant for an imaginary foe, one that Jowy eagerly envisioned to be as relentless as he was in need of something to keep the deep and troubling thoughts away from his conscious mind. Riou was, naturally, a better training partner, but the situation called for him to train alone; he was not about to wake up his best friend and in extension, his best friend's sister, in the dead of the night just because he needed to train. That was just unreasonable.
Jowy made a final, and violent sideways blow to his imaginary opponent, before finally coming to a standstill, reasonably satisfied with the exertion he had just put his body to. He sighed, and then wiped the cold sweat from his brows.
He wanted to laugh, suddenly, at how stupid this all was; that words and promises didn't possess the same accuracy and instance that the magic present in their world, the runes, had. He could call upon the power of the common Lightning Rune on his left hand, for example, to instantly strike at the ground before him so very easily, with just a mere movement of a hand a few chants... and yet, his promises would not come to fruition so easily.
"I'm going to keep moving forward," he muttered to himself, his grip on his weapon tightening. That was his promise. Nanami had threatened to thwap him to death, if she had to, to make him understand that despite everything... they forgave him. Jowy, truthfully, doubted that, but a promise was a promise... and sometimes, you make things happen, don't you? He promised them, Riou and Nanami, that he'd stop dwelling on the past, that he'd move forward... and at the same time, atone for his sins. After all, one didn't need to continuously dwell on the same mistakes over and over again to actually atone, in fact, the better way of atoning was to painfully move on... and look for foot stones from there, no matter how hard it was.
And it was hard.
Finally, he sighed again... and smiled. "A promise... is a promise." He would do it for his friends; the friends who were willing to take him back after all that had happened.

"Please use this", it says. But how exactly to use it... there's... letters, obviously. Do I... make the words on this?
...I think the better question would be why I'm talking to myself like this. [ sigh ]
Maybe I should have told them it was alright to stay in Dunan a bit longer. Grasslands could wait.
[ beep ]
Ah-- I think. I see. This must be... what should make it work. At least, I know this can't be an ancient Sindar artifact. It's not even magical.

In point form:
- ★ the Black Sword Rune : the thing has made its home on Jowy's right hand, and should be there when he comes ~
★ his quarterstaff/bo, the Heavenly Star Staff (it's just a name, really :D )
★ a Lightning Rune (on the left hand) : considering the fact that the Black Sword Rune, being only a half of True Rune, drains his life force in exchange for power that's near equivalent to that of True Runes, and with Jowy having good magic stats, I'm assuming he picked up a Lightning Rune in his journeys with Nanami and Riou, to better protect his friends. After all, you can't only rely on just one thing :)
★ a few herbs, anti-toxins, potch... basically, your standard on-the-road must-haves. Jowy would be the type to be prepared ♥
